Following is a brief list of some frequently asked questions. If you have a question which does not appear on this list, please do not hesitate to contact us.

1) How old do I have to be to take driver education?
You have to be at least either 14 years and 10 months old or be at least a freshman in high school.

2) What do I need to be able to take my DMV written test?
First of all, as of January 1, 2004, the minimum age at which a minor may obtain his or her instruction permit changed from 15 to 15 1/2 years old.
If you are between the ages of 15 1/2 and 17 1/2, you will need to bring with you to the DMV a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education and either a Certificate of Enrollment in Driver Training or a Certificate of Completion of Driver Training.
If you are over 17 1/2 you will not need any driving school issued certificate, but as with all driver license applicants you will need to pay a $12 DMV fee, submit proof of legal presence in the USA, present your social security card, and fill out the appropriate forms. Your parents must also fill out a Parental Consent Form.

3) How many attempts do I get to pass my written and driving tests?
Teens have 3 attempts at each. In the event that you do not pass your written test, you must wait one week before taking it again. If you fail your behind the wheel test, you must wait two weeks before taking it again.

4) Does the DMV accept PEN's driver education completion certificates?
Yes. We have been offering PEN's driver ed home study course since 1995. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be issued DMV form DL387, which you will need to take with you to the DMV the day of your written exam. To confirm that the DMV does accept PEN's certificate, please contact DMV headquarters in Sacramento at 1-916-657-6550.

5) Do my parents/guardians have to supervise the course?
Yes. A parent or guardian will need to be present when you take the exam portions of the course.

6) What is the cost of the course?
The regular price for the course is $149, but for a limited time, we are offering all California residents a $74 discount, bringing the price of the course down to only $75. This price includes your Driver Education completion certificate (DL 387).

7) How long do I have to complete the course?
Although most of our students finish the course in no time, you have a full 30 days to do so.

8) Once I get my permit, how do I go about getting my license?
The earliest age at which you can get your license is 16. In order to get your license, you will have to hold your permit for 6 months before you can go to the DMV and take your behind the wheel road test. In the meantime you will have to take 6 hours of Driver Training at a DMV licensed school.
