PENschool's Online and Booklet Driver Education Course was the only independent Driver Ed curriculum chosen to participate in the recent two year California DMV research project mandated by the California State Legislature in order to determine the efficacy of home-study Driver Education courses. PENschool was very honored to have been chosen to assist the California DMV in evaluating different forms of Driver Education.
Well, the result are in, and we could not be happier. The California DMV concluded that home-study Driver's Ed courses are just as good, if not better, than traditional classroom courses. The following excerpts are from the report submitted to the California State Legislature by the California DMV:
"Home-study driver education programs exist in several states, but none have been scientifically evaluated to determine if such courses are as effective as classroom-based courses for teaching driver education. Almost 1500 students were randomly assigned to receive classroom instruction, a CD ROM home-study course, a workbook home-study course, or an internet/workbook home study course [our course]. Few differences were found on exit exam knowledge and attitude scores, but tended to favor the CD and internet/workbook courses [our course] over the workbook or classroom courses...The findings present no compelling evidence that home-study courses are less effective than classroom courses for teaching driver education. The findings could result in more widespread use of home-study courses. The use of low-cost home-study courses as the first stage of a two tiered driver education program could make such programs more feasible and acceptable to the public."
| It is important to note that the only non DMV written Driver's Education program that was used for the study was PEN's, which is the one that we offer. This is the same program that was scientifically proven superior to classroom instruction. Furthermore, one should note that not all home-study Driver Education programs are the same. Our program was the only one that met the DMV's stringent requirements for participation in the research study. No other driver education online or workbook course can claim that.
