We recommend Pegasus Driving School for your behind the wheel instruction. They offer lessons in LA and surrounding counties. If you live in the area, give them a call at 1-800-593-5069.
For your information, the law requires that persons under the age of 18 must take six hours of behind the wheel instruction, known as Driver's Training, before they may go to the DMV and get their California Driver's License. These six hours must be taken at a DMV licensed driving school, such as Pegasus, and must consist of 3 lessons each lasting 2 hours. Upon completion of the lessons, Pegasus Driving School will issue you a Driver's Training Completion Certificate which must be submitted to the DMV the day of your actual behind the wheel road test.
These lessons can be taken once you have successfully completed our Driver Ed course and are at least 15 1/2 years of age. In order for you to be able to obtain your California DMV learner's permit, in addition to providing the DMV with your Driver Education Completion Certificate, which will be mailed to you by PENschool, you will have to provide the DMV with a Certificate of Enrollment in Driver Training or a Certificate of Completion of Driver Training. Pegasus Driving School, or any other California DMV licensed driving school that you may chose to go with, can furnish you with these certificates.
You should note that once you obtain your instruction permit from the DMV, after having passed your DMV written test, the permit will not become valid until you have taken your first lesson of behind the wheel instruction at a DMV licensed school. Furthermore, you will have to hold the permit for at least six months before you can take the behind the wheel road test at the DMV and you must be at least 16 years of age to get your license.
In addition, as of July 1, 1998, new laws went into effect regulating teen provisional license requirements. Basically they require for the teen to obtain, in addition to the six hours of Driver's Training at a DMV licensed school, 50 hours of behind the wheel instruction by an adult who is at least 25 years of age and who has a valid license. Ten of these hours must be at night time. Also, during the first six months after you get your license, you may not transport in your car any passenger under the age of 20 unless accompanied by an adult 25 years of age or older. Additionally, during the first 12 months, you are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5:00 am unless accompanied by an adult 25 years of age or older.
